Creative kokeshi doll carved in wood.

This delicate kokeshi takes its name from the motif that adorns her kimono: "Tsubaki", camellia.

The camellia is the quintessential winter flower, which is why the leaves of the camellia that decorates this kokeshi are covered with snow.

When the camellia blossoms wither, they fall off the stem whole, instead of losing their petals bit by bit. Because of this, it has been regarded as a symbol of the union of a couple until after death. The sepals are said to represent the man, and the petals the woman.

For the samurai, camellias were considered to be flowers of bad fortune, as the flower, falling whole from the stem, evoked in their minds the fall of heads severed by a katana on the battlefield.

The lines of the kimono's collar have been drawn using the pyrography technique, which gives texture to the surface of the wood.
