This very special motif is an exclusive creation of the renowned kimono designer Jogan Yoshio.

Jogan Yoshio is Director of the Kyoto Design Factory. There he continues to teach traditional kimono design and printing techniques, researches the Yuzen technique, and advises companies and organisations on how to preserve traditional Japanese kimono decoration techniques.

In his own words:

‘Now that the era of mass production and mass consumption is over, many human beings have experienced the emptiness of seeking wealth in material things and environmental issues have become a common concern for all human beings, there is a growing need for a change of consciousness in design.

From now on we will need designs that make people happy. Happiness is nothing but a wealth of the heart’.

Regarding the motif, cranes convey a wish for lasting happiness, or health, due to their long life.

Tabane noshi’ are those sets of “noshi” strips tied together (Tabane). Originally, noshi were dried strips of a highly prized mollusc, which were included in gifts to express the wish for longevity as well as prolonged happiness. Over time, the strips of mollusc have been replaced by thin strips of yellow paper with the same wish.

The depiction of a small bundle of noshi (in this picture, decorated with colourful motifs) is meant to convey the same wish for long life and lasting happiness; the fact that the strips extend everywhere symbolises the wish for fortune to extend to all areas of the recipient's life as well.

Wash it in a washing machine at low temperature, delicate cycle, inside out, so it lasts longer. Don’t use bleach or bleachers, a soft spin-dry cycle, iron at low temperature.

It’s recommended you to wash it before use. Cotton fabrics can shrink up to 5%.
