Japanese Rustic Indigo fabric 'Hiragana'
Japanese 100% cotton fabric.
This classic Japanese print is made up of hand-drawn hiragana text. Hiragana, one of the three Japanese syllabaries, came about when the women of the court, who were forbidden to learn kanji, decided to create a new system of communication, with characters that each represented a syllable.
Flat weave made with slightly thicker yarns, resulting in a loosely woven, slightly weave with some transparency and good drape. This arrangement and thickness of the threads conveys the feel of a rustic, traditional weave, reminiscent of those woven by hand. This gives the series its name: "Rustic Indigo".
Perfect, for example, for a kimono jacket, a flowing trousers .....
Idea: You can mix different prints from this series with fabrics from your favourite old jeans, and give them a second life in the form of a jacket, bag, or by patching them using the sashiko technique. If you need sashiko needles and threads, you can find them HERE.
