Skein of 40m. from the "Awai-iro" series of 100% cotton thread from the Japanese brand Olympus, specialised in haberdashery, and especially in sashiko, also known as Japanese embroidery.

Available in several subdued colours, so characteristic of Japanese sewing and patchwork: Sage green #A08, golden hay yellow #A07, smoky blue #A09 and lavender #A10.

The dusty pink colour shown in the set photo, in a 20m skein, is a perfect match for the Awai-iro range. You can find it in the range of reds, pinks and oranges.

You can find patterns, ideas and uses in our Pinterest board, Sashiko.

The sashiko was used to mend and reinforce the garments that were worn out. While its purpose was practical, over time a number of patterns were developed so that while the garments were repaired, they were also embellished.

This sewing technique, which arose out of necessity due to the lack of materials, gave rise to boro. This was the name given to these garments, often fishermen's and farmers' coats, which were formed by joining each small piece of fabric that covered holes and tears, by means of sashiko stitches. This textile art is very appreciated today by collectors, although it contains in its essence that origin of scarcity and hardship, and the ability of the Japanese people to overcome it.
