Japanese dobby fabric printed on 100% cotton, with fish motif. These fish are "tai", red sea breams. Aquamarine blue background.

The red sea bream is an auspicious symbol as its name, "tai", is reminiscent of the Japanese term "medetai", which translates as happy, auspicious, or worthy of celebration.

It is common to see the winner of a sumo wrestling match (or even a politician who has won an election) waving a sea bream in his hand.

I'm sure you also recognise this fish in taiyaki, or delicious hot dumplings filled with red bean paste.

The dobby is a cotton fabric weaved with uneven threads, which gives it a unique touch.

The irregular weft creates a textured surface, that resembles the tsumugi silk (also known as raw silk) weaved with the threads obtained from the very end of the silk cocoon,  so that thickness differs from one to another.

We love this uneven fabric, as it completely fits in Japanese aesthetic tradition of finding beauty in imperfection (wabi-sabi)
