100% cotton fabric printed with a motif of humanised cats (neko). They are depicted dressed in kimono, and in human attitudes. Grey background.

In the Edo period, the laws did not permit the graphic representation of certain characters: actors, politicians, etc.

In an ingenious way, ukiyo-e artists circumvented censorship by presenting vignettes depicting animals. Frogs, rabbits, donkeys, monkeys and cats were drawn as the main characters. These cats were dressed in clothes that had been worn by some protagonist of the bustling life of the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo). They also appeared in some situation in which the character had been involved.

A common entertainment for the public who consumed the ukiyo-e (the precursor of manga) booklets week after week, was to guess which public figures were hiding behind each animal.

One of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists known for depicting cats in his works was Utagawa kuniyoshi
