Kome no megumi means in Japanese "the blessing of rice". Rice has been the basis of food in Japan for thousands of years.

Rice bran contains a wax that is used to make Japanese Kome no megumi candles.

The wick, which is handmade from washi paper and dried reed, is hollow. This allows oxygen to rise inside the candle, and the flame that is produced is larger and brighter than usual.

The Japanese firm Takazawa has been transforming the gifts that plants give us into Japanese candles to illuminate our best moments for over a century.

When you give away one of their candles, you are not giving away an object, but time, the moments lived in the light of that candle.

That's why we tell you how long each one lasts, so that you can decide whether to give a coffee with a friend, a relaxing bath, a quiet reading, or a family dinner.

Each Kome no Megumi candle lasts about 30 minutes, which will give you time to take a break if you are studying, or working at home, relaxing over a cup of tea or coffee, or enjoying your favourite reading or music.

They come in a clean, simple box with a naïve design, made of kraft cardboard. The large size contains 2 tiers of 10 candles in a lockable box with a flap, and the small size includes a cardboard box with a transparent plastic sliding lid.
