Chiyogami paper, hinamatsuri emperor and empress
Japanese chiyogami paper, hinamatsuri emperor and empress over a red background
Japanese Yuzen Chiyogami paper in a mate red color with drawings of the emperor and empress relative to the Hinamatsuri (Girls Festival).
Each March 3rd the Hinamatsuri is celebrated in Japan, where a platform is built inside houses that can reach up to 7 levels and where dolls are found that represent the emperor and empress, and their court bellow them.
Tradition says that these dolls could take with them the bad spirits, preventing them from hurting the inhabitants of the house. This fed the belief that the dolls had to be taken out the following day so much that withdrawing them late could delay the age at which the girls of the house would marry.
