'Eggshell' Japanese porcelain was exported to Europe by the Dutch East India Company from its beginnings until the Meiji era, when it was highly appreciated and priced in the salons of Old Europe.

Later, due to instability in Europe and the First World War, demand fell, and the last kiln that knew the secret of manufacturing this type of very fine porcelain closed its doors.

Thus, production ceased for 100 years, until, after a laborious research task, the Yamahira Kiln managed to rescue this beautiful product from oblivion. The choice of a finely ground material, and a high proportion of glass, determines the extreme thinness of the wall of each piece.

This set comes from the Japanese city of Arita, which in 2016 celebrated its 400th anniversary as the "Cradle of Porcelain in Japan".

With a thickness of less than 1mm, each glass is perfectly translucent, allowing the colour of the drink to be appreciated if it is placed in front of the light. They are finished off with a very thin golden edge.

Each of the glasses has a name, inspired by its shape. From left to right:

  • 大黒: "Daikoku", is the pillar called "daikoku", the main pillar of a traditional house.
  • 曲水: "Kyokusui", evokes the shape of a stream flowing through a garden during the Heian period.
  • 竹取: "Taketori", inspired by the traditional tale of the bamboo cutter (and Princess Kaguya Hime), evokes the shape of bamboo.
  • 日月: "Nichigetu", the sun and the moon.
  • 富士: "Fuji", inspired by the shape of Mount Fuji.

The exterior finish combines glossy lines in light relief on a very white matte background; touch also counts in the sake tasting experience. The interior is glossy.

Delicacy in its purest form, the glasses weight between 9g and 20g, their diameter is 60mm, and they are 40mm high.

They can contain between 40ml and 60ml, depending on the model.

They are presented in an elegant gift box made of paulownia wood.
